65 Pro Mod GTO

We have been dedicated to racing traditional Pontiacs for many years and it has been and continues to be a challenge which we enjoy.  In an effort to make our past and present race cars more competitive, we have dedicated extensive time to research and development to advance our performance.  Our new ProMod GTO is the newest addition to this effort.  It is the product of many years of work and we could not be more pleased with the results.

We look back on 2011

2011 brought about further changes to the Mellott Racing program. Through the joint efforts of K&M Performance Parts, Kauffman Racing Equipment and our own Mellott Racing crew we were able to make modifications to our block and heads which aided us in reliability. This was a monumental undertaking and took months to complete all of the engineering and design changes.

In addition to engine modifications we made transmission and clutch changes that have allowed us to launch the car with more consistency. We continue to work with the clutch, fuel and timing to find the right tune for this Pontiac motor. Things are coming together.

The chassis is working as anticipated and it seems the more power we throw at it the better it responds. Patrick Budd the chassis builder and our tuner is waiting for us to turn it up so we can get full utilization of his skills as a chassis designer and tuner.

It was interesting to watch the progress of the car and team this season. We were fortunate enough to add an alcohol engine tuner and he has already brought us further than we had anticipated. We continue to see our 60 and 330 foot times get quicker and faster as well as the 1/8 mile. At his request we still haven’t made a full ¼ mile hit on the car -- he is still working on the short times. Hopefully next year we can let it eat the entire ¼ mile.

We always strive to do well at the Norwalk, Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac Tri Power Nationals. This year we were able to run a personal best of a 6.66 even though we had an early shout off at about the 1,000 foot mark. This is exciting for the team for several reasons one of which is it gives us an indication that we have potential.

I have developed a new appreciation for the people who do this full time. Tuning an alcohol car is an art and a science. Not something to be taken lightly that’s for sure. We will be back in 2012 to continue with our Pontiac – that’s for certain.
